A major investment in Black entrepreneurship. A bigger opportunity to build.

BlackTECH Hub has received  investment support from the Government of Canada, through the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario), to launch the Black AI Venture Accelerator (BAIVA), a new venture development initiative designed to support Black entrepreneurs in building, scaling and commercializing AI-enabled ventures.

The investment was announced on August 26, 2026, by the Honourable Evan Solomon, Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Innovation and Minister responsible for FedDev Ontario, as part of nearly $15 million in federal funding for nine Black-led organizations across southern Ontario. For BlackTECH Hub, the investment represents an important expansion of our work advancing entrepreneurship, innovation, technology adoption and economic opportunity within Black communities.

But more importantly, it creates an opportunity to help more Black founders participate meaningfully in one of the most significant economic transformations of our time: artificial intelligence.

From Opportunity to Market

Artificial intelligence is rapidly changing how businesses are created, operated and scaled. Entrepreneurs can use AI to improve productivity, automate processes, understand customers, develop new products and services, and reach markets in ways that were previously difficult or expensive. Yet access to technology alone does not create successful businesses.

Founders also need the right combination of business knowledge, technical expertise, mentorship, market access, networks, commercialization support and capital readiness to transform promising ideas into sustainable ventures.

That is where BAIVA comes in.

The Government of Canada describes BAIVA as a structured venture development program that will empower Black entrepreneurs across southern Ontario to build, scale and commercialize AI-enabled ventures, while strengthening AI adoption, competitiveness and inclusive growth within Canada’s AI economy.

Introducing the Black AI Venture Accelerator

The Black AI Venture Accelerator (BAIVA) is designed to help Black entrepreneurs move from opportunity to market.

The program will support founders through four critical stages of venture development:

Discover
Identify meaningful business opportunities, understand customer problems and explore where AI and emerging technologies can create measurable value.

Validate
Test assumptions, understand market demand, refine business models and establish whether customers are willing to adopt and pay for the proposed solution.

Build
Turn validated opportunities into viable products, services and businesses with access to practical expertise, technology and business development support.

Commercialize
Strengthen go-to-market strategies, investment readiness, intellectual property considerations, market access and the capabilities required to grow a sustainable venture.

Rather than focusing solely on entrepreneurship training, BAIVA is designed around the realities of actually building and commercializing a business.

Building Black Participation in Canada’s AI Economy

AI presents an enormous economic opportunity, but participation matters.

As businesses increasingly integrate AI into products, operations and decision-making, there is an opportunity to ensure that Black entrepreneurs are not simply consumers of emerging technologies but are also builders, founders, innovators and owners within the new economy.

This is particularly important as Canada continues investing in AI adoption and commercialization as drivers of productivity and competitiveness.

BAIVA will help founders explore both sides of that opportunity: building AI-enabled ventures and using AI to strengthen the competitiveness of their businesses.

The goal is practical application. Technology must ultimately help founders solve meaningful problems, serve customers better, operate more effectively and create sustainable economic value.

An Investment in Inclusive Economic Growth

The $1.2 million investment in BlackTECH Hub is part of a broader Government of Canada commitment to strengthening Black entrepreneurship.

Through the Black Entrepreneurship Program Ecosystem Fund, the nine organizations announced by FedDev Ontario will expand entrepreneurship training, mentorship, business advisory services, technology adoption support and market access opportunities across southern Ontario.

As Minister Evan Solomon stated in announcing the investments:

“Black entrepreneurs and business owners are shaping a more dynamic and competitive economy across southern Ontario.”

The investment recognizes an important principle: expanding economic opportunity strengthens the economy as a whole. When more entrepreneurs have the opportunity to build competitive businesses, introduce new products, create jobs and access new markets, communities and economies benefit.

The Next Chapter for BlackTECH Hub

For BlackTECH Hub, BAIVA builds on a broader mission to advance Black entrepreneurship, innovation and economic inclusion.

Since launching in 2018, BlackTECH Hub has grown into a community of more than 10,000 members, supporting entrepreneurs and professionals while building initiatives focused on economic participation and digital competitiveness. The federal government’s announcement recognized this growing ecosystem and BlackTECH Hub’s work in southern Ontario.

The next chapter is about going deeper.
It is about helping founders move beyond ideas.

Beyond training.
Beyond simply starting businesses.
It is about strengthening the capabilities, connections and opportunities required to build, commercialize and grow.

BAIVA is one important part of that journey.

What Comes Next

The first BAIVA cohort is expected to begin in October 2026, bringing together selected Black entrepreneurs for a structured venture development journey.

Over the coming months, BlackTECH Hub will share more information about participating founders, ecosystem partners, mentors, program activities and opportunities to engage with the initiative.
